To place a hockey bet, provide the ticket writer with the team’s betting number and the amount you want to wager. If the team you bet on meets the goal spread requirement, you win. The payout is determined using the “Money Line.”
Money Line or Straight Up: This bet is based on a $1 stake. If there is a “minus” (-) before the betting number, the team is favored. If there is a “plus” (+), the team is the underdog. For a Money Line bet, your team simply needs to win the game.
Goal Spread: In hockey betting, the team you bet on must “cover the spread,” which means they need to win or avoid losing by more than a set number of goals.
Total: This refers to the combined points scored in a game, also known as the Over/Under.
Hockey Parlays: You can place a single bet involving multiple teams. All teams in the parlay must win for you to receive a payout. The payout is calculated by first determining the payout for the initial game using the Money Line and then applying that amount to the subsequent games.
Example: If the Freezers are favored by 1½ (1.5) goals, they need to win by at least two goals for a successful bet. If you bet on the Wolves, you win if:
a. The Wolves win the game.
b. The game ends in a tie.
c. The Wolves lose by no more than 1 goal.
Example:
Bet # | Team | Money Line | Total | Goal Line |
401 | Wolves | +180 | +1.5 (-160) | |
402 | Freezers | -220 | 5 | -1.5 (+140) |
If the Freezers are listed at -220 to win, you would need to bet $22 to earn $10 on Detroit. Conversely, if San Jose is at +180 to win, you would wager $10 to potentially win $18.
Note: The team listed at the bottom is typically the home team unless specified otherwise. The goal line or puck line works with the point spread. For instance, if you bet $10 on the Freezers and they win by 2 or more goals, you would make $14 in profit, totaling a return of $24. On the other hand, if you bet $16 on the Wolves and they win, tie, or lose by just one goal, you would earn $10 in profit, resulting in a total return of $26.
You can also bet on whether the total score of the game will be higher or lower than a specified number. The result does not depend on which team covers the spread; it’s based on the combined final scores of both teams. The payout is generally calculated at odds of 10/11 (-110), unless otherwise stated.
In the case of a shootout, one goal is added to the shootout winner’s total to determine both the final score and the game winner.
